Responsibilities
- Analyze and decompose large SQL Server stored procedures and create modernization and migration strategies.
- Separate business rules from data access and lead refactoring toward domain-driven, service-oriented, and event-driven architectures.
- Optimize queries, indexing strategies, and execution plans, and create reusable migration playbooks and tooling.
- Design semantic data models, vector database solutions, embedding pipelines, RAG architectures, and AI-agent context data structures.
- Establish knowledge graph patterns and evaluation frameworks for retrieval quality, relevance, and continuous improvement.
- Architect data solutions across relational, NoSQL, analytical, cloud, and vector database platforms.
- Design Kafka-based event flows, materialized views, CQRS patterns, data synchronization, pipelines, ETL/ELT orchestration, data quality, and observability patterns.
- Build AI-powered database engineering tools, structured AI-consumable artifacts, and architecture skills for AI-assisted development.
- Define data residency, partitioning, multi-region, governance, lineage, and compliance strategies.
- Partner with AI/ML, domain, and application architecture teams; contribute to enterprise standards and mentor engineers.
Requirements
- 8–12 years of database engineering and architecture experience, including significant enterprise-scale SQL Server experience.
- Deep SQL Server expertise covering T-SQL optimization, stored procedures, query plans, indexing, and performance tuning.
- Hands-on experience decomposing complex stored procedures and moving business logic into application services.
- Experience designing across SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cosmos DB, Snowflake, and data lakehouse platforms.
- Production experience with CDC, Kafka, outbox patterns, event sourcing, and CQRS.
- Expertise in canonical and dimensional data modeling, schema evolution, and extensible data design.
- Hands-on experience with at least one vector database such as Pinecone, Weaviate, Milvus, pgvector, or Azure AI Search.
- Understanding of RAG architecture, embedding models and pipelines, chunking, retrieval optimization, hybrid search, reranking, and LLM context requirements.
- At least 2 years of active use of AI coding assistants for database work, plus experience building AI- or LLM-enabled tools and automation.
- Strong programming skills in C#, Java, or Python for migration tooling, embedding pipelines, and services.
- Experience with cloud data services such as Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Azure AI Search, Azure Synapse, Snowflake, or AWS equivalents.
- Experience with Terraform, ARM/Bicep, or CloudFormation for data-platform infrastructure.
- Understanding of domain-driven design, data governance, lineage, and compliance requirements such as HIPAA and PCI-DSS.
- Preferred experience includes regulated-industry work, RAG or AI-powered search applications, knowledge graphs using Neo4j or Amazon Neptune, open-source or database tooling contributions, and mentoring or community leadership.
