Responsibilities
- Own the administration, availability, reliability, and scalability of Proton’s web-scale MySQL fleet accessed through ProxySQL.
- Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and resolve complex infrastructure and database issues.
- Design automation, code, and tooling that reduce operational toil and improve database platform reliability.
- Tune performance across hardware, operating system, storage, network, and query layers.
- Provide database architecture, data modeling, scalability, and integration guidance during product design reviews.
- Plan and execute database version upgrades and full-stack updates with minimal service disruption.
- Evaluate distributed database technologies and influence company-wide engineering standards and long-term database strategy.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience operating highly available MySQL databases at scale in production.
- Deep expertise in MySQL replication, query optimization, indexing, schema design, and performance tuning across operating system and application layers.
- Production experience with ProxySQL and Linux.
- Strong automation experience using scripting or custom tooling, including Python, Go, Bash, or equivalent.
- Experience with observability systems such as Prometheus and Grafana and using operational data to diagnose infrastructure issues.
- Experience operating databases on bare-metal or on-premise infrastructure rather than cloud-managed database services.
- Hands-on experience with distributed databases such as CockroachDB or YugabyteDB is preferred.
- Experience with Puppet or comparable configuration management systems is preferred.
- Exposure to high-traffic, multi-tenant ProxySQL deployments is preferred.
