Base Salary
$170k - $190k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead architecture and design for complex Datastore systems and projects.
- Design and scale PostgreSQL data models, schemas, indexes, query behavior, and access controls.
- Build and operate Kafka-driven event pipelines, including producers, consumers, replay, idempotency, and lag handling.
- Develop and evolve GraphQL APIs and services supporting clinical and scientific data workflows.
- Own dataset snapshot pipelines into the data warehouse and support third-party integrations.
- Design schema migrations, including zero-downtime migrations, dual writes, backfills, lock avoidance, and verification.
- Operate PostgreSQL in production, including upgrades, replication, backup and restore, connection pooling, bloat, vacuum behavior, and extensions.
- Debug and profile complex problems across system boundaries and improve structure, testing, tooling, documentation, and dashboards.
- Write RFCs, guide technical decisions, plan work, and make trade-offs across stakeholder needs.
- Mentor engineers, provide actionable feedback, and improve engineering practices.
Requirements
- 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.
- Deep proficiency in at least one of data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
- Strong production SQL and PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexes, query plans, and query tuning.
- Hands-on experience with Kafka or an equivalent event-processing technology such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis.
- Proficiency in Julia or Python; Julia experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience deploying and operating containerized services, with familiarity with Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Helm.
- Experience mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience working effectively across disciplines and in remote or asynchronous teams.
- Experience with or interest in LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production, including appropriate guardrails.
- For the Datastore Systems focus, experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript with Node.js and end-to-end event-driven pipeline design.
- For the PostgreSQL and Data Modeling focus, deep PostgreSQL query-planner knowledge, data modeling, schema evolution under load, production operations, and the ability to teach and document database practices.
