Senior Software Engineer
Toast, Inc.Responsibilities
- Design, build, deploy, and maintain scalable backend microservices and RESTful APIs using Kotlin, Java, and AWS.
- Lead complex projects spanning multiple teams and systems.
- Promote automated testing, phased rollouts, high test coverage, and zero-regression releases.
- Monitor service health, analyze logs and metrics, and participate in on-call rotations to maintain uptime.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and UX partners on designs, code reviews, features, and products.
- Mentor and coach peer engineers.
- Use AI tooling as part of the engineering workflow.
Requirements
- At least five years of professional backend software development experience using Kotlin, Java, or another object-oriented language.
- Hands-on experience building RESTful APIs and fault-tolerant, highly scalable, and secure distributed systems.
- Proficiency with SQL/NoSQL databases and distributed datastores, including understanding when to use different datastore types.
- Familiarity with distributed systems, asynchronous messaging such as Kafka, Pulsar, or AWS SQS/SNS, and AWS cloud platforms.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, collaboration, curiosity, humility, empathy, and respectfulness.
- Experience designing platform APIs used by other teams is preferred.
- Experience with document-based or columnar data stores is a plus.
