Base Salary
$116k - $193k/yr
Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction, architecture, interfaces, service boundaries, schemas, and data contracts for the team's systems.
- Build and review production backend services, APIs, shared libraries, operational data stores, and data-processing systems while staying hands-on weekly.
- Partner with product managers on feasibility, sequencing, and tradeoffs.
- Partner with Data Scientists and ML Engineers from problem framing through production serving, monitoring, and retraining.
- Lead design reviews and RFC discussions and make cross-cutting technical decisions.
- Support engineer development through code reviews and partnership with the engineering manager.
- Own operational health, including on-call quality, observability, and production systems.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 7 years of experience building production software, including at least 2 years as a Tech Lead for a team or significant system.
- Experience building production backend services, APIs, internal platforms, or distributed applications.
- Experience designing APIs, data contracts, and operational databases consumed by other teams.
- Familiarity with asynchronous processing, queues, event-driven systems, change-data capture, idempotency, retries, concurrency, and backward compatibility.
- Working knowledge of machine learning and data science concepts, including feature engineering, evaluation, training and serving skew, drift, and retraining.
- Experience taking a model from notebook to production and leading technical discussions across software engineering and machine learning or data science.
- Experience improving team output through interfaces, tooling, or work decomposition and leading engineers without direct authority.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, containers, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and observability.
- Strong programming skills beyond SQL and experience owning systems through deployment, incident response, and on-call.
- Practical judgment about effective and unreliable uses of AI tools.
