Base Salary
$196k - $245k/yr
Responsibilities
- Research retrieval, reasoning, and agentic AI techniques and determine which ideas belong on the product roadmap.
- Prototype emerging concepts and turn validated ideas into production-grade features.
- Define technical direction across multiple Fivetran AI teams.
- Build and maintain backend and frontend systems, including Agents Schema pipelines and the Context Catalog UI.
- Advance AISQL for natural-language-to-SQL queries grounded in dbt metric definitions and executed against data warehouses.
- Own production reliability through on-call participation, incident response, and SRE work.
- Establish testing and QA standards and perform hands-on QA when needed.
- Use coding agents to automate repetitive engineering work.
- Independently translate product and leadership direction into concrete execution plans.
- Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the team.
- Participate in and help shape the hiring and interview process.
Requirements
- 8+ years of programming experience across Python and/or Java, with the ability to work across backend and frontend systems.
- Trusted-expert experience defining technical direction and influencing decisions across multiple teams.
- Ability to read AI/ML research and turn promising findings into prototypes and production systems.
- Strong product and market judgment when evaluating emerging AI techniques.
- Track record of independently executing work from ambiguous, high-level direction.
- Experience with SQL and data warehouses such as BigQuery, Snowflake, or Databricks.
- Willingness to work across research, backend, frontend, SRE, and QA.
- Experience writing performant code and improving unfamiliar codebases.
- Experience using coding agents or similar AI tooling.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and influence technical decisions beyond the immediate team.
- Ability to thrive in a startup-like environment with shifting priorities and high ownership.
- Bonus experience with LLM-powered applications, including RAG pipelines, embeddings, evaluation frameworks, or agent frameworks.
- Bonus familiarity with semantic layers such as dbt, LookML, or Sigma.
- Bonus experience with MCP, AI agent integrations, site reliability engineering, data processing, ETL/ELT, data connectors, AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, or open-source AI and data projects.
