$202k - $224k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs serving map, location, and geospatial data.
- Build and optimize high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems for real-time map experiences.
- Own backend systems end-to-end across architecture, implementation, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production improvement.
- Drive backend architecture evolution, scalability, system efficiency, developer productivity, and reduced technical complexity.
- Collaborate with mobile engineers, Maps platform teams, Product, and other engineering teams.
- Resolve complex technical challenges, make engineering tradeoffs, and contribute to technical design and code reviews.
- Mentor engineers and help establish engineering best practices.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional experience in backend software engineering or a related technical field.
- Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language, including Java, Go, C++, or Python.
- Experience designing, building, and operating scalable backend services and distributed systems in production.
- Strong understanding of API design, service-oriented architectures, data storage, and distributed systems fundamentals.
- Experience with performance optimization, troubleshooting, and highly available services.
- Ability to independently drive complex engineering projects from design through production.
- Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Preferred experience with high-throughput, low-latency services, geospatial data, mapping technologies, location-based services, distributed caching, database performance optimization, cloud infrastructure, observability tools, and mobile-supporting backend systems.

- Base salary range of USD $202,000-$224,000 per year for San Francisco and Sunnyvale, California-based roles.
