Responsibilities
- Design and build the end-to-end search and retrieval platform, including indexing pipelines, ranking systems, and AI-facing query layers.
- Model search across work orders, assets, procedures, and other core entities to deliver highly relevant results.
- Operate and optimize distributed systems for reliability, performance, and scalability under real-world load.
- Drive architectural decisions balancing correctness, performance, and maintainability.
- Own integrations between search systems and upstream data sources.
- Explore semantic search, vector retrieval, and AI-enhanced relevance using modern machine-learning tooling.
- Ship early versions, gather feedback, and iterate rapidly.
- Participate in business-hours on-call duties.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience designing, building, and operating production-grade search systems end-to-end, including indexing, query execution, relevance tuning, and infrastructure.
- Experience with search technologies such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Lucene, Solr, or similar.
- Understanding of embeddings, chunking, and retrieval strategies.
- Familiarity with analyzers, BM25, shard sizing, cluster health, and relevance optimization.
- Ability to take systems from implementation through deployment and production operation across backend services, data pipelines, and integrations.
- Experience evaluating and improving search relevance through qualitative analysis and quantitative metrics is preferred.
- Experience shipping AI-powered or LLM-integrated backend systems is preferred.
- Familiarity with GPT, Copilot, or Cursor is preferred.
- Understanding of multi-tenancy and data security, including ACLs, field-level access controls, and secure index partitioning, is preferred.
- Experience building observability and success metrics into systems is preferred.
