Responsibilities
- Own complex mobile features end to end, from technical design and implementation through release, measurement, and ongoing operation.
- Build and evolve mobile experiences for banking, invoicing, payments, notifications, tasks, and file management.
- Contribute to Xero’s transition from native iOS and Android development toward React Native.
- Make architectural decisions involving native platforms, cross-platform boundaries, platform integration, performance, debugging, and native modules.
- Work across the mobile/backend boundary to shape APIs, data flows, and Backend-for-Frontend patterns.
- Operate software at scale by supporting availability, performance, accuracy, security, scalability, incident response, and post-mortems.
- Improve engineering efficiency through automation, AI-assisted development, and technical simplification.
- Mentor engineers, provide technical guidance, conduct code reviews, and raise engineering standards.
Requirements
- Strong demonstrable experience building and shipping production mobile applications using Swift and/or Kotlin.
- Deep knowledge of iOS and/or Android mobile engineering, including performance, lifecycle management, release processes, observability, reliability, and production operations.
- Willingness to develop React Native capability and help shape the transition to a cross-platform architecture.
- Experience owning complex mobile features through technical design, implementation, release, measurement, and ongoing operation.
- Experience with mobile backend systems, APIs, or Backend-for-Frontend patterns is highly valuable.
- Experience shipping software to large, active user bases and making technical decisions for scale.
- Pragmatic technical judgment balancing delivery speed, customer impact, system health, and maintainability.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and support other engineers and improve engineering standards.
- Active use of AI-assisted development, automation, and modern engineering tooling.
- Curiosity, adaptability, collaboration, and openness to new technologies and ways of working.
