Responsibilities
- Lead an independent machine learning and artificial intelligence research project from start to finish.
- Conduct research applicable to Pinterest engineering teams and real-world product problems.
- Work with production ML systems, including algorithmic research, infrastructure, data engineering, training, inference, and product development.
- Use AI tools and agents for prototyping, experimentation, code comprehension, debugging, and implementation.
- Validate AI-generated outputs through testing, code review, and critical evaluation of correctness, performance, security, and maintainability.
- Write clean, efficient, sustainable code and take ownership of project quality with minimal guidance.
Requirements
- Be working toward a PhD in Computer Science, machine learning, NLP, Statistics, Information Sciences, or a related field.
- Be proficient in at least one systems language such as Java, C++, or Python, or one ML framework such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or MLflow.
- Demonstrate AI-native engineering skills, including designing agent-friendly codebases and learning agent-first development tools.
- Have experience conducting research and solving analytical problems.
- Be able to communicate effectively, collaborate as a team player, and solve open-ended problems.
- Preferred: publications in machine learning, AI, data science, data analytics, statistics, or related technical fields.
- Preferred: interest in applying machine learning research to impactful Pinterest product problems.
