Responsibilities

  • Own the Customer Files Orchestration Service end to end, from ambiguous problem definition and architecture through implementation, deployment, scaling, and operations.
  • Design distributed workflows using durable state, idempotent processing, consistency models, delivery guarantees, lease and heartbeat mechanisms, and compare-and-swap transitions.
  • Build queuing and flow-control capabilities including fair queuing, rate limiting, backpressure, circuit breaking, dead-letter handling, and autoscaling.
  • Design versioned, documented, backward-compatible file and workspace APIs for internal consumers.
  • Operate the service through primary on-call, incident response, post-mortems, observability, tracing, and automation that reduces operational toil.
  • Mentor engineers through code and design reviews and collaborate with storage, extraction, indexing, connectors, and front-end teams.
  • Communicate technical trade-offs, system correctness, throughput, cost, and delivery risks to engineering and product stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience building production software and owning significant components of systems used by real customers.
  • Extensive production experience with Python and AWS, including Python concurrency, the GIL, asyncio, task failures, event-loop behavior, semaphores, and throughput management.
  • Production Kubernetes experience, including tuning KEDA scalers and resource requests and debugging worker and API failure modes.
  • Experience with large-scale orchestration or data pipelines spanning multiple stages and service boundaries with retries, partial failures, and long-running steps.
  • Practical understanding of eventual and strong consistency, at-least-once and exactly-once delivery, idempotency, queues, fair queuing, rate limiting, backpressure, and noisy-neighbor isolation.
  • Strong API design, testing, code review, observability, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, operational ownership, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Preferred: experience with document-management systems, extraction, OCR, format handling, very large files, and third-party DMS integrations.
  • Preferred: experience with event-driven architectures, Kafka or MSK, SQS, event-driven autoscaling, Temporal, Step Functions, retrieval, embedding, or indexing pipelines.
  • Prior legal-industry experience and familiarity with team-topology concepts are bonuses.

Benefits

  • Flexible hybrid work model for office-based roles.
  • Flexible work arrangements, including work from anywhere for up to 8 weeks per year.
  • Career development, continuous learning, Grow My Way programming, and skills-first growth support.
  • Comprehensive benefits including flexible vacation, two company-wide mental health days, Headspace access, retirement savings, tuition reimbursement, incentive programs, and wellbeing resources.
  • Two paid volunteer days annually plus opportunities for pro-bono consulting and ESG initiatives.
  • Inclusive, globally recognized culture focused on belonging, flexibility, work-life balance, and social impact.
