Responsibilities

  • Design and implement automation sequencing, state machines, failure detection and recovery, and APIs for manufacturing nodes.
  • Enforce software safety invariants, validate commands before hardware interaction, and leave machines in known states on exit paths.
  • Build simulators, device mocks, sequencing tests, timing tests, recovery tests, and machine conformance suites for CI.
  • Instrument and optimize machine cycle time across motion, vision, and process steps.
  • Bring up new hardware and develop calibration, verification, and diagnostic tools for manufacturing machines.
  • Debug issues from sensors and homing failures through orchestration logic using logs, telemetry, and the machine itself.
  • Improve reliability through observability, fault handling, graceful recovery, and proactive degradation detection.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation approximately once every 10 weeks, with one-week weekend-inclusive shifts covering either 6am–2pm or 2pm–10pm.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience developing software for systems that interact with hardware or the physical world.
  • Demonstrated depth in at least one system, including the design decisions, implementation, failures, and debugging approach.
  • Strong programming fundamentals and fluent Python, which is used daily and for coding interviews.
  • Practical understanding of state machines, sequencing, failure modes, safe retries, and software-driven physical hardware.
  • Systematic debugging skills and ability to collaborate across software, electrical, and mechanical boundaries.
  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred experience with electromechanical systems, including sensors, actuators, and motion axes, in production environments.
  • Preferred fluency in C++, Rust, or Go, especially the ability to read a C++ motion stack.
  • Preferred robotics experience with kinematics, motion planning, vision-based alignment, calibration, and shipped systems.
  • Preferred experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, observability, simulation, or digital-twin validation.

Benefits

  • Compensation includes equity and benefits.
  • The role is based at offices in Emeryville or Santa Clara, California.
  • The on-call schedule provides defined 6am–2pm or 2pm–10pm coverage shifts, with no expectation to work beyond the assigned shift on those days.

About Atomic Machines

201-500 employees

Atomic Machines develops the Matter Compiler (MC-1), a digital, multi-process, multi-material micromanufacturing platform that fabricates complete micromachines and MEMS-class devices. The company plans to commercialize both the platform’s automated Nodes and device products, with an initial product aimed at AI data-center hardware. Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Emeryville, California, Atomic Machines is privately held and operates a hybrid fab to support rapid development and scale-up.
