Responsibilities

  • Develop reusable map canvases and layer systems for raster imagery, vector features, terrain, and analytical overlays.
  • Build layer discovery, grouping, ordering, visibility, opacity, legends, styling, persistent workspace state, and resilient refresh behavior.
  • Implement drawing, measurement, spatial selection, feature inspection, coordinate readouts, filtering, map export, temporal exploration, imagery comparison, and linked map/table interactions.
  • Extend mapping libraries with custom layers, controls, picking behavior, and rendering logic below the React component layer when needed.
  • Integrate COGs, PMTiles, GeoParquet, and Arrow-based sources with viewport-aware loading, cancellation, caching, and progressive feedback.
  • Profile and optimize CPU, GPU, network, and memory usage using level-of-detail strategies, background processing, and controlled layer updates.
  • Collaborate with UX designers, analysts, backend engineers, and domain experts on cartography, accessibility, interaction quality, component examples, browser tests, and performance checks.

Requirements

  • Several years of experience building sophisticated production interfaces with TypeScript and React.
  • Substantial experience with web mapping or geospatial visualization using tools such as MapLibre, deck.gl, Mapbox GL, OpenLayers, or CesiumJS.
  • Experience extending mapping libraries or building reusable visualization components beyond embedding a standard map.
  • Strong understanding of frontend state, asynchronous data loading, browser rendering, and performance profiling.
  • Familiarity with WebGL concepts and the performance costs of geometry processing, GPU buffers, large textures, and frequent layer updates.
  • Good geospatial fundamentals, including projections, coordinate systems, vector tiles, raster imagery, scale, and spatial accuracy.
  • Care for cartography and interaction details, including readable symbology, useful legends, keyboard access, and clear loading and error states.
  • Clear English communication, collaboration skills, and eligibility to work in Germany.
  • Preferred experience includes custom deck.gl layers, shaders/GLSL, luma.gl, WebGPU, GeoArrow, loaders.gl, DuckDB-WASM, Web Workers, kepler.gl, CARTO, TanStack Query/Store/Router, Tailwind CSS, Storybook, Playwright, terrain and 3D visualization, professional GIS tools, military mapping standards, defense or intelligence environments, open-source mapping, German, offline applications, and self-hosted applications.

Benefits

  • Remote-first work in Germany with regular team sessions in Berlin and occasional sessions in Frankfurt and Munich.
  • 30 days of vacation, equipment support, and learning support.
  • Opportunity to shape a substantial web GIS and shared map platform and own components used across the platform.
  • Technically demanding work across interaction design, cartography, browser performance, and GPU rendering.
  • Direct access to designers and GEOINT specialists.
