Responsibilities
- Own administration, configuration, health, availability, performance, reliability, and security for Power BI, AtScale, Databricks, Azure, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude.
- Administer Databricks workspaces, cluster policies, SQL warehouses, Unity Catalog, service principals, workspace security, and cost controls.
- Manage Power BI tenant settings, capacities, workspaces, gateways, and deployment pipelines, as well as AtScale semantic models, catalogs, environments, and query performance.
- Establish monitoring, alerting, observability, performance baselines, capacity tracking, runbooks, self-service documentation, and incident escalation processes.
- Own platform cost optimization, including capacity sizing, compute policies, autoscaling, SKU and license selection, AI spend, showback, chargeback, forecasting, and budget planning.
- Implement governance, access models, role-based and row-level security, content certification, AI data boundaries, logging, retention, auditing, and regulatory controls.
- Configure cross-platform integrations, MCP server connections, single sign-on, service principals, APIs, gateways, and environment promotion across development, test, and production.
- Report on platform health, usage, adoption, AI tool utilization, license efficiency, cost, and risk to data leadership and executive stakeholders.
- Manage technical relationships with Microsoft, Databricks, AtScale, and Anthropic, including support escalations, roadmap reviews, renewals, and service levels.
- Advise on platform strategy, build-versus-buy decisions, architecture direction, enterprise reviews, and AI governance while mentoring engineers, analysts, and business users.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in data platform engineering, platform administration, analytics engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience administering and engineering enterprise cloud data platforms, including Databricks and Azure, in production environments.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience administering enterprise analytics and semantic platforms, including Power BI or comparable technologies, supporting hundreds of production assets and more than 1,000 users.
- Demonstrated ownership of production data platforms serving large, distributed user bases, with responsibility for security, performance, reliability, and cost optimization.
- Proven experience delivering measurable cloud data and analytics platform cost optimization and establishing governance and technical standards across multiple tools and stakeholder groups.
- Experience managing enterprise software vendors, support escalations, roadmap input, renewals, and licensing structures.
- Experience operating as the most senior technical authority on a platform without direct reports.
- Preferred experience with Microsoft Fabric architecture, capacity models, and migrations from standalone Power BI Premium.
- Preferred FinOps practice experience or certification, enterprise AI governance, MCP servers, agent integrations, and observability tooling.
- Preferred certifications include Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or equivalent.
- Strong written and verbal communication, executive presentation skills, distributed-team collaboration, and comfort with occasional after-hours changes, upgrades, and critical incidents are required.
