Responsibilities
- Own query and index performance across the production SQL Server estate using execution plans, Query Store, wait statistics, and production telemetry.
- Investigate and implement horizontal scaling approaches such as multi-cluster architecture, contained availability groups, and sharding.
- Improve latency-critical card authorization and ledger paths against agreed p99 performance budgets.
- Own high availability and disaster recovery, including availability groups, failover, backup and restore testing, and operational runbooks.
- Build self-service tools for detecting query plan regressions and diagnosing query performance.
- Automate database operations and manage configuration as code using PowerShell, Python, or Terraform.
- Manage SQL Server cost alongside latency and uptime objectives.
- Review designs with Product Engineering and data analytics teams and improve organization-wide data-access practices.
- Research and promote database technologies such as graph databases and zero-downtime data migrations, including their use with Entity Framework and C#.
Requirements
- Experience with ORMs, ideally Entity Framework, and understanding of their performance tradeoffs.
- Substantial experience running Microsoft SQL Server at production scale, including self-managed SQL Server, Managed Instances, or Azure SQL.
- Deep knowledge of query optimization, plan cache, indexing, statistics, locking, blocking, isolation levels, tempdb, and wait types.
- A track record of delivering specific, measurable database performance improvements end to end.
- Experience scaling relational data through partitioning, archival, denormalization, caching, read replicas, or migration to another data store.
- Ability to write application code as well as scripts, with expert-level T-SQL and experience with PowerShell or Python and infrastructure as code.
- Hands-on experience designing high availability and disaster recovery systems and leading production incidents.
- Working knowledge of other database engines such as PostgreSQL and their relative advantages and disadvantages.
- Ability to explain technical concepts and tradeoffs to non-database specialists.
