Compiler Backend Engineer
Normal Computing CorporationBase Salary
$200k - $300k/yr
Responsibilities
- Build compiler backend passes that convert lowered programs into efficient code for custom AI hardware.
- Own scheduling, tiling, memory planning, fusion, and dispatch decisions for LLM inference.
- Collaborate with hardware architects on compiler abstractions and feed compiler constraints back into evolving hardware designs.
- Validate optimizations using simulators, FPGA prototypes, and eventual silicon while maintaining a trusted performance regression suite.
- Coordinate with frontend compiler engineers on lowered programs and determine which operations use generated code versus hand-tuned kernels.
Requirements
- Deep experience with compiler optimization or code generation for accelerators or other non-CPU targets, including scheduling, tiling, fusion, or resource allocation.
- Ability to reason about memory bandwidth and utilization as well as asymptotic complexity.
- Experience designing compilation approaches from first principles and shipping optimizations with measured performance impact.
- Experience developing software for evolving hardware through simulation and bring-up.
- Fluency in Python and familiarity with C, C++, or Rust.
- Preferred experience with PyTorch compilation tools, ML compilers, in-memory or spatial computing, hardware design tools, cycle-level or performance simulators, open-source compiler or kernel infrastructure, or compiler/performance publications.
About Normal Computing Corporation
At Normal, we're rewriting AI foundations to advance the frontier of reasoning and reliability in the physical world. We are tackling problems across semiconductors and industrials with a mix of interdisciplinary approaches across the full stack: from probabilistic software infrastructure and algorithms to hardware and physics, enabling AI that can reason and understand its own limits. We understand that our technology is only as powerful as the people behind it. Every employee drives significant impact within our products, often working directly with customers and embedding across our tightly-knit team. Our team members are driven by curiosity and passion for solving some of the most challenging problems in the world of atoms. Normal was founded in 2022 by engineers and scientists that pioneered industry-leading Physics + ML tools for next-gen AI at Google Brain and Google X.
