Responsibilities
- Own technical direction, architecture, and implementation of significant parts of Shopify’s native iOS and Android applications.
- Ship complex mobile features and solve ambiguous, multi-quarter technical problems through production operation.
- Apply AI-assisted development techniques and teach other engineers how to use them effectively.
- Improve engineers through code review, pairing, and technical leadership.
- Collaborate with product, design, support, and other stakeholders.
- Help identify and evaluate engineering candidates.
- Define analytics, logs, errors, metrics, traces, alerts, and operational playbooks.
- Manage app-store release pipelines, staged rollouts, feature controls, rollback planning, and incident response.
Requirements
- Deep experience building and operating production native mobile applications used by millions of users.
- Strong command of Swift and SwiftUI, or Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
- Ability to review, debug, and guide work across both iOS and Android platforms.
- Experience designing maintainable mobile architecture covering state, effects, dependencies, navigation, persistence, and platform lifecycles.
- Strong concurrency and cancellation judgment, including Swift structured concurrency or Kotlin coroutines and Flow.
- Experience designing GraphQL mobile APIs and data layers with caching, pagination, mutation consistency, refresh, offline behavior, and typed failures.
- Experience building accessible, localized, and performant interfaces across devices, screen sizes, and network conditions.
- Testing experience covering logic, asynchronous behavior, user journeys, device behavior, and production readiness.
- Experience shipping through app-store release pipelines and responding to production incidents.
- Record of leading ambiguous, multi-quarter technical initiatives from problem definition through production operation.
