Responsibilities
- Improve dbt Core’s Python execution engine by identifying, debugging, and eliminating performance bottlenecks.
- Architect and implement improvements to the adapter interface connecting dbt to databases and data platforms.
- Debug complex issues involving Linux process management, concurrency, database query planning, and network protocols.
- Lead technical design discussions and contribute to dbt Core’s long-term architectural roadmap.
- Mentor engineers and review open-source community contributions for quality, testing, and design.
- Own distributed systems, troubleshoot production issues, and participate in an on-call rotation to maintain high availability.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of professional software development experience focused on production backend systems.
- Deep backend engineering experience and proficiency in Python.
- Comfort navigating and debugging Linux environments, including process scheduling, memory management, and file systems.
- Strong understanding of database internals, including query execution, storage layers, indexing, and transaction management.
- Strong communication, ownership, and problem-solving skills.
- Preferred: background in data warehousing, data engineering, or analytics engineering.
- Preferred: production experience with Go or Rust.
- Preferred: experience contributing to or maintaining a popular open-source project.
- Preferred: experience building compilers, interpreters, or developer tooling.
- Preferred: familiarity with performance analysis tools such as perf or strace.
