Responsibilities
- Design and develop foundational AI frameworks, internal APIs, middleware, and routing layers.
- Build MCP servers and reusable skills for AI model function calling and tool interaction.
- Enable AI models to securely interact with internal databases, microservices, and external APIs.
- Implement enterprise AI guardrails, including data privacy, sensitive-data scrubbing, prompt-injection defenses, and output validation.
- Design, develop, and implement complex Java-based software capabilities for computer-based systems.
- Collaborate with engineers to deliver client software solutions and troubleshoot issues under multiple deadlines.
- Support automated testing pipelines for non-deterministic AI outputs and perform other assigned duties.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance are required; an active TS/SCI clearance with an agency-appropriate polygraph is an example.
- At least five years of software engineering experience with modern Java frameworks and libraries, or three years of relevant experience with a related master's degree, or nine years of relevant experience with a high school diploma or equivalent.
- A bachelor's degree in a related field, a master's degree in a related field, or a high school diploma or equivalent under the stated experience alternatives.
- Experience with enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, microservices architecture, object-oriented programming, Linux, and configuration management tools.
- Strong Java development experience, testing skills, troubleshooting ability, and the capacity to work independently and collaboratively under pressure.
- Preferred experience includes Claude Code, Gemini, NiFi, Kafka, AWS, Kubernetes, Azure, distributed or NoSQL databases, Elasticsearch, Postgres, Trino, Python, Flask, Vue, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, JIRA, Confluence, and GitHub Enterprise.
- Must be able to work in a hybrid environment for an average of one to two days per week at the Columbia, Maryland office and adapt to schedule changes.
