Base Salary
$220k - $280k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, deploy, and own backend services and infrastructure for Within’s AI platform.
- Create data ingestion and storage systems, APIs, background processing, data models, service boundaries, and deployment architecture.
- Implement reliable AI orchestration workflows using structured outputs, tool calling, state management, grounding, and guardrails.
- Develop evaluation frameworks, model regression tests, traceability, and exception-handling systems for AI features.
- Design enterprise security, least-privilege access, tenant isolation, auditability, and secure data-handling patterns.
- Set technical direction, own the technical roadmap for a core area, make architectural decisions, and mentor earlier-career engineers.
- Partner with product, design, frontend, and infrastructure teams to turn ambiguous product ideas into production-ready technical plans.
Requirements
- At least 4 years designing and shipping production-grade products.
- Strong backend engineering experience designing reliable, observable, secure, and high-performance services, APIs, data models, and infrastructure.
- Experience designing at least one production system from scratch that other engineers use at scale.
- Experience shipping multiple AI-powered features to production, with knowledge of LLMs, multimodal agents, orchestration, evaluations, model regression, and failure modes.
- Ability to make architectural tradeoffs, set technical direction, and establish engineering patterns and conventions.
- Experience with enterprise security, scalability, data handling, and reliable distributed systems.
- Strong product judgment, execution, technical communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
- No CS or Engineering degree is required; evidence may come from production work, open-source contributions, research, or high-quality side projects.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, and Copilot, and building AI-assisted development workflows or internal tooling is expected.
