Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of high-impact backend systems and APIs for rider experiences and operational intelligence.
- Architect and implement scalable platforms that ingest, process, and analyze city and vehicle data.
- Drive the technical vision and roadmap for backend services supporting rider journeys in complex venues.
- Build and maintain mission-critical infrastructure for Waymo’s autonomous vehicle operations.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, and operations teams to deliver rider-facing and internal solutions.
- Mentor engineers and promote best practices in software design, testing, and reliability.
- Own complex features from conception through production deployment and ongoing operation.
- Improve system performance, scalability, and reliability for the autonomous fleet.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
- Eight years of experience in backend development across Java/Kotlin, Python, Go, or C++ codebases.
- Experience designing and developing distributed systems.
- Experience collaborating with software developers and cross-functional stakeholders across levels and sites.
- Experience leading large efforts and teams of engineers.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Preferred experience with reliability monitoring and alerting, security and privacy practices, documentation, integration testing, production hygiene, and support processes.
- Preferred experience with large-scale distributed systems and proficiency in C++.
