Responsibilities
- Own the TCP transport layer between payment terminals and the platform, including heartbeat, keepalive, idle-connection, reconnect, and timeout handling.
- Manage store-and-forward behavior so only genuine connectivity or timeout failures are queued or replayed.
- Oversee BIN-based routing and processor or network selection, including BIN updates and contactless or EMV requirements.
- Diagnose terminal-side exceptions and protocol or hardware/firmware interaction faults and drive permanent fixes.
- Lead root-cause analysis for production payment-processing incidents affecting transaction integrity.
- Define transaction and transport design standards for retries, idempotency, and failure classification through architectural reviews.
- Maintain PCI-compliant transaction-data handling and compliance with payment-processing certification requirements.
- Mentor engineers and review transport, store-and-forward, and routing code changes.
- Direct AI coding agents, define their scope, review their changes, and enforce human review for PCI-scoped or transaction-integrity code.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.
- 8+ years building production distributed systems in Java, including stateful protocol-level code involving sockets, retries, timeouts, backoff, and idempotency.
- Direct experience with payment processing, card-present transaction flows, or another domain where partial failures have significant financial consequences.
- Strong debugging and deterministic reproduction skills for intermittent and timing-sensitive defects.
- Working knowledge of PCI data security standards.
- Experience with highly available backend configurations spanning application servers, databases, and hardware failover.
- Proficiency with Spring Boot, socket-level communication, Maven, CI/CD, and Git at team scale.
- Clear technical writing demonstrated through adopted root-cause analyses, architecture decision records, or design documentation.
- Experience mentoring and reviewing engineers in a shared high-stakes codebase.
- Sufficient Vue 3 and TypeScript proficiency to read and debug POS client code and negotiate API contracts.
- Daily professional use of an AI coding agent in a production codebase and judgment to verify its output.
- Preferred qualifications include EMV or contactless-payment experience, issuer or network certification, store-and-forward patterns, retail POS hardware or terminal integration, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, SQL, MongoDB, REST API design, Swagger/OpenAPI, bounded AI-agent direction, and software-development certifications.
Benefits
