Responsibilities
- Own the test automation strategy and automation pyramid across Java, .NET, React, and Flutter stacks.
- Design, build, maintain, and personally contribute production-quality code to shared automation frameworks, libraries, and test data tooling.
- Define automated coverage standards and enforce quality gates through pull request review and continuous integration.
- Lead flaky-test reduction, test execution optimization, pipeline reliability, and quality engineering targets.
- Own performance, load, stress, soak, resilience, security, and accessibility testing at the pipeline level.
- Establish performance baselines and SLOs, embed performance checks in CI, and diagnose code, query, and infrastructure bottlenecks.
- Set quality engineering standards for test strategy, coverage, environments, test data, defect classification, and release criteria.
- Conduct squad quality reviews, maintain quality metrics and reporting, and lead root-cause analysis for released defects and incidents.
- Coach engineers through pairing, code review, guilds, and structured training, while providing technical direction to embedded quality engineers.
- Act as the senior technical escalation point for release quality risk and provide go/no-go recommendations.
- Own quality tooling and licensing costs, and evaluate AI-assisted test generation, maintenance, and defect analysis tools.
- Provide functional leadership and contribute to performance reviews and development plans for quality engineers.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree (NQF 7 or higher) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- At least one recognized professional certification in test or performance engineering, such as ISTQB Advanced Level or an equivalent performance-tool certification.
- At least 10 years of software engineering or quality engineering experience, including at least 5 years building test automation frameworks and 3 years leading performance and load testing on production-scale systems.
- At least 3 years of technically leading quality engineering across multiple teams and setting standards adopted by engineers outside the reporting line.
- Production software development experience in Java, C#/.NET, or TypeScript, with the ability to discuss personal code.
- Experience embedding quality into continuous delivery pipelines, including quality gates, test parallelization, environment provisioning, and test data management.
- Mobile test automation experience with Flutter, native iOS/Android, or React Native is strongly preferred.
- Cloud certification, such as AWS Certified Developer, Solutions Architect, or DevOps Engineer, or an Azure equivalent is preferred.
- Certification in a CI/CD, container, or infrastructure platform such as Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, or Terraform is preferred.
- Experience in a regulated, high-availability consumer environment such as online gaming, fintech, e-commerce, or telecoms is advantageous.
- Honours or master's degree is advantageous.
