Responsibilities
- Design, implement, maintain, deploy, monitor, and support open-source research software for genomic, single-cell, spatial omics, and biomedical data visualization and analysis.
- Lead the engineering and research strategy, roadmaps, milestones, and long-term ownership of one or more software projects.
- Establish engineering practices including code review, testing, continuous integration, documentation, and release management.
- Lead peer-reviewed publications, present research at scientific conferences, and contribute to grant proposals and funding opportunities.
- Build and support open-source user and developer communities through documentation, tutorials, workshops, issue triage, and contributor engagement.
- Collaborate with domain scientists, national and international research consortia, and external collaborators to gather requirements and integrate tools into workflows.
- Conduct user studies, contribute to biomedical data standards and file formats, mentor trainees and staff, and participate in teaching and training activities.
Requirements
- Minimum of seven years of post-secondary education or relevant work experience.
- Five or more years of software engineering experience focused on web applications.
- Five or more years of experience analyzing and visualizing single-cell and spatial biology data.
- Five or more years of biomedical data research experience.
- Five or more years of experience in large-scale collaborative academic or publicly funded research projects, including a record of leading major academic research software projects.
- Three or more years of open-source software development and community-building experience.
- Three or more years of training and community-outreach experience and at least one year of mentoring trainees and staff.
- Proven success publishing in bioinformatics and computational biology venues, along with data visualization research experience.
- Experience developing software in Python and R, plus grant-writing skills.
- A doctoral degree in biomedical informatics, computer science, computational biology, data science, or a related field is strongly preferred.
