Responsibilities
- Design and build telemetry foundations, instrumentation strategies, telemetry pipelines, and data models at organizational scale.
- Develop and operate SLO frameworks, SLIs, error budgets, burn-rate alerts, and intelligent alerting architectures.
- Build observability and detection systems covering metrics, traces, monitors, dashboards, and cross-service dependencies.
- Design OpenTelemetry SDK instrumentation, Collector agent and gateway architectures, processors, exporters, context propagation, and metadata enrichment.
- Solve large-scale telemetry challenges including sampling, high-cardinality metrics, tail-based sampling, trace stitching, and pipeline reliability.
- Lead cross-functional technical initiatives and drive adoption of observability standards across teams without direct authority.
- Partner with engineering, platform, operations, offering-owner, and SOC/NOC teams to improve service health visibility and incident response.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in observability, reliability engineering, or telemetry platform development.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives across teams without direct management authority.
- Hands-on experience building telemetry and observability systems from the ground up at large scale.
- Deep hands-on experience with OpenTelemetry, including SDK instrumentation, Collector architecture, processors, exporters, context propagation, and metadata enrichment.
- Strong understanding and production experience with SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, and SLO-based alerting.
- Experience designing alerting architectures for distributed systems, including burn-rate alerts, multi-signal correlation, intelligent routing, and alert-storm prevention.
- Strong proficiency in at least two of Kotlin, Java, Go, or Python.
- Experience with Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, or Splunk observability platforms, including APM, metrics, traces, monitors, and dashboards.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices architectures, API gateways, event-driven systems, and service-to-service dependencies.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, including translating observability concepts into strategies for engineering leaders and partner teams.
- Ability to establish organization-wide engineering standards and drive adoption through influence, documentation, and tooling.
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Preferred qualifications include payment or financial-services experience, organization-wide observability platform experience, AI/ML for operational problems, incident-management familiarity, Terraform or Pulumi, service catalog or registry systems, and experience supporting SOC/NOC operators.
