Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain custom drivers and backends for OpenStack Ironic, Cinder, Nova, and Neutron.
- Contribute bug fixes and improvements to upstream OpenStack projects through community review and governance processes.
- Own the full lifecycle of driver and backend work, including design, code review, testing, deployment, and operational health.
- Architect integrations between OpenStack services and internal DCIM/IPAM systems such as NetBox and Nautobot.
- Establish engineering standards for testing, error handling, observability, and upgrade safety.
- Investigate production incidents, lead root cause analysis, and deliver durable fixes and upstream patches where appropriate.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship focused on OpenStack internals and bare metal infrastructure.
- Evaluate new OpenStack features and recommend platform adoption strategies.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, networking, storage, product, and engineering teams on technical requirements and architecture.
Requirements
- 10 or more years of software development experience, including at least four years of hands-on production OpenStack experience.
- Deep working knowledge of at least two of Ironic, Cinder, Nova, or Neutron, including driver interfaces, plugin architectures, and internal request flows.
- Production experience writing, debugging, or extending OpenStack drivers or backends.
- Strong Python skills, including asynchronous programming, pytest, tox, and OpenStack SDK/client libraries.
- At least five years of Linux/Unix experience involving systems debugging and network troubleshooting.
- Experience operating services in Kubernetes or similar container orchestration environments.
- Understanding of bare metal provisioning, PXE, IPMI/Redfish, BMC management, network boot workflows, and hardware lifecycle states.
- Familiarity with oslo.config, oslo.messaging, oslo.db, Keystone authentication, and OpenStack service deployment patterns.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and test automation for OpenStack or infrastructure software.
- Working knowledge of data center networking concepts including VLANs, bonding, LACP, routing, and DHCP/PXE interaction.
- Strong distributed-systems debugging and observability skills, including log analysis, tracing, and metrics-driven incident investigation.
- Ability to lead complex technical work from ambiguous requirements through production delivery and communicate design proposals effectively.
- Preferred qualifications include upstream OpenStack contributions, Gerrit and Zuul CI experience, Ceph or other distributed storage experience, Go proficiency, NetBox or Nautobot API automation, hardware attestation or secure boot experience, and network automation or SDN experience relevant to Neutron.
