Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable backend systems, services, and APIs for Upstart Bank initiatives.
- Deliver reliable software for medium-sized engineering projects in collaboration with senior engineers.
- Translate business, operational, and regulatory requirements into maintainable software.
- Improve reliability, observability, performance, and operational excellence across backend services.
- Contribute to technical design discussions, testing, code reviews, and continuous engineering-quality improvements.
- Partner with Product, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Finance, Operations, and Engineering.
- Take operational ownership while continuously developing technical judgment in an ambiguous environment.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 4 years of backend or full-stack software engineering experience.
- Experience building and operating production software systems and scalable services, APIs, or web applications.
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Java, Kotlin, Python, or Go.
- Strong software design, testing, debugging, and operational ownership fundamentals.
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous, cross-functional environments.
- Preferred experience in fintech, financial services, payments, or another regulated industry.
- Preferred experience with distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, Kafka, gRPC, backend technologies, system modernization, or backend platform development.
