Senior Software Engineer - Infrastructure
Toast, Inc.Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, deploy, and operate software that connects services and routes traffic reliably.
- Improve the scalability, resilience, and observability of critical infrastructure systems.
- Own systems end to end, improving rollout safety and failure detection, diagnosis, and resolution.
- Investigate production issues, participate in on-call, and implement lasting reliability improvements.
- Collaborate with engineers across services and infrastructure projects.
- Contribute to technical designs, code reviews, and technical discussions.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to other team members.
- Use AI tooling as part of the daily engineering workflow.
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend software engineering experience in Kotlin or another relevant language.
- Strong experience designing, scaling, and diagnosing failures in distributed systems.
- Experience owning and operating production systems, with strong testing and code-quality practices.
- Demonstrated ability to solve ambiguous, high-impact problems and deliver scalable solutions.
- Interest in large-scale traffic systems and motivation to learn quickly.
- Clear communication and collaborative work across teams and time zones.
- Preferred: experience building platforms or infrastructure for engineering teams.
- Preferred: familiarity with routing, load balancing, DNS, or HTTP.
- Preferred: experience with AWS, Terraform, or cloud networking.
- Preferred: experience with Envoy, Istio, service meshes, or high-availability traffic systems.
