Responsibilities
- Develop and deploy production AI systems involving generative AI, LLM architectures, advanced NLP, and foundation model adaptation.
- Take novel machine learning ideas from research through production implementation across Apple Services.
- Build and optimize LLM systems using fine-tuning, instruction tuning, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, and semantic search.
- Develop personalization, ranking, optimization, reinforcement learning, or multi-armed bandit systems and experiment platforms at scale.
- Evaluate language quality, relevance, hallucination, and safety, and apply inference optimization techniques such as quantization, distillation, and model compression.
- Communicate research results, architecture decisions, and technical tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, NLP, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience delivering production AI systems.
- At least 6 years of experience in an applied research or machine learning role.
- Expertise in deep learning, modern NLP, transformer architectures, and foundation model adaptation.
- Experience developing LLMs, including fine-tuning, instruction tuning, and prompt engineering for domain-specific reasoning.
- Proficiency in Python and machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Experience deploying models in production systems and working with distributed data processing systems such as Spark.
- Strong understanding of large-scale experimentation and the ability to communicate technical research and tradeoffs.
- Preferred experience with RAG pipelines, vector-based semantic search, representation learning, semantic embeddings, model evaluation, inference optimization, reinforcement learning, policy alignment, RLHF, personalization, ranking, optimization, and multi-armed bandit platforms.
- Preferred publications in top-tier ML/AI venues or patent filings demonstrating novel research contributions.
