Responsibilities
- Define and drive long-term architecture for multi-country Global Payroll systems and country-specific workflows.
- Lead complex cross-functional technical initiatives spanning payroll, HRIS, time, benefits, finance, compliance, and accounting systems.
- Design durable platform abstractions that support payroll expansion across jurisdictions without brittle one-off implementations.
- Improve system reliability, observability, auditability, and operational resilience.
- Make technical tradeoffs involving correctness, compliance, latency, maintainability, development speed, scale, and cost.
- Identify and reduce architectural bottlenecks, technical debt, and operational risk.
- Partner with product and business leaders to translate customer, regulatory, and business needs into technical direction.
- Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, technical coaching, and engineering standards.
- Remain hands-on with implementation in ambiguous, risky, or foundational technical areas.
- Represent engineering judgment in planning, prioritization, incident review, and roadmap discussions.
Requirements
- 15+ years of software engineering experience, preferably in backend, platform, infrastructure, distributed systems, product engineering, or systems engineering.
- Experience operating at Senior Staff, Principal, or Staff+ technical scope.
- Deep hands-on experience with coding, debugging, system design, and building large-scale production systems.
- Strong programming ability in one or more of Python, Java, Go, C++, Scala, Kotlin, or C#.
- Strong architecture and system-design depth across distributed systems, APIs, databases, data modeling, concurrency, reliability, observability, and performance.
- Ability to own ambiguous, cross-functional, multi-team technical initiatives end-to-end.
- Strong technical judgment and ability to balance speed, quality, scale, reliability, cost, and maintainability.
- Ability to influence senior engineers, product leaders, and stakeholders without formal authority.
- Track record of mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar.
- Strong communication skills and comfort working in fast-paced, high-ambiguity environments.
- Preferred experience includes high-growth technology companies, multi-team platforms, cloud infrastructure, developer platforms, workflow engines, data platforms, internal tooling, reliability engineering, incident management, security, compliance, auditability, SaaS, fintech, HR technology, payroll, benefits, or workflow-heavy domains.
- Exposure to AI/ML infrastructure, LLM systems, automation platforms, evaluation frameworks, or data-intensive systems is preferred.
