Responsibilities
- Own the technical quality bar across architecture, testing, observability, security, and performance.
- Make and document architectural decisions involving service boundaries, data models, AI infrastructure, failure handling, and recovery.
- Evaluate and own build-versus-buy decisions.
- Build tooling and automation for CI, test infrastructure, environments, safe deployments, and AI-assisted development workflows.
- Establish reliability, monitoring, and safety properties for mission-critical systems.
- Resolve difficult production incidents and redesign systems while they are running.
- Mentor engineers, sharpen designs, and raise team effectiveness.
- Shape the technical roadmap with the founders across classical software systems and AI.
Requirements
- Staff-level experience as a backend or full-stack engineer owning high-traffic or high-stakes systems.
- Production experience building and operating LLM-powered or ML systems, including reasoning about failure modes, evaluation, cost, and latency.
- Experience making architectural decisions at scale and owning their consequences.
- Strong judgment on build-versus-buy decisions and infrastructure investment.
- Experience setting and enforcing engineering standards that improve team velocity.
- Experience leading a team and raising its technical bar, with or without a formal manager title.
- Hands-on ability and willingness to write and review code.
- Comfort working in an ambiguous early-stage environment.
- Healthcare or regulated-industry experience, including HIPAA, PII/PHI handling, or auditability, is a plus.
- Experience with real-time systems, voice, or event-driven architectures is a plus.
- Experience as an early engineer at a startup that scaled is a plus.
- Python and TypeScript experience is a plus.
