Responsibilities
- Lead engineering design for significant system areas from problem definition through reliable production operation.
- Design horizontally scalable distributed components while accounting for failure modes, consistency, performance, cost, and security.
- Create design documents, comprehensive test coverage, observability, and technical documentation.
- Use agentic AI development tools and establish reusable workflows, context and prompt patterns, and evaluation practices for the team.
- Own the quality of merged code and set standards for reviewing AI-generated code.
- Balance technical trade-offs with product and delivery commitments and communicate decisions to leadership.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through pairing, design reviews, and code reviews.
- Lead diagnosis, communication, and follow-up prevention work during multi-service critical incidents.
- Monitor resource usage for cost savings without compromising performance or reliability.
- Collaborate with Product, Support, and engineering teams and participate in planning, reviews, demos, and retrospectives.
Requirements
- Around six or more years of experience building and owning production software through multiple iterations, incidents, and architectural changes.
- Deep system-level design judgment and experience considering failure modes, cost profiles, reliability, security, and cross-service effects.
- Demonstrable day-to-day experience with agentic coding tools and evidence of improving AI-assisted development practices adopted by others.
- Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend language and the ability to learn additional languages quickly.
- Experience with relational data modeling and query performance, caching, search engines, containerization, CI/CD pipelines, and foundational AWS services.
- Strong influence, mentorship, written communication, and collaboration skills across distributed teams.
- Preferred experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular, React, Java, cybersecurity or email security, and LLM-backed application features such as retrieval, tool use, or evaluation harnesses.
