Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain biology software for genomics and structural biology, including libraries, command-line tools, pipelines, datasets, and benchmarks.
  • Own software releases from research code through testing, validation, benchmarking, documentation, packaging, and versioning.
  • Maintain released software by triaging issues, reviewing outside contributions, and managing breaking changes.
  • Represent the team in conferences, workshops, tutorials, and direct collaboration with biology researchers and software maintainers.
  • Partner with computational and experimental scientists to turn research code into reusable, well-tested software.
  • Lead technical direction through design reviews, code reviews, and mentoring, with potential responsibility for leading a small team.
  • Use Claude and AI coding agents for design, implementation, testing, and review while validating the correctness and performance of generated code.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience building, releasing, and maintaining biology software adopted by researchers outside the candidate’s own group.
  • Deep working expertise in genomics or structural biology, including relevant data types, file formats, standard tools, and failure modes.
  • Proficiency in Python and comfort working with large datasets in Linux and cloud or cluster computing environments.
  • Experience with rigorous testing and release engineering, including unit and integration tests, continuous integration, reference-data validation, packaging, and versioning.
  • Experience using AI coding tools centrally in software development and verifying the correctness and performance of agent-written code.
  • Experience leading a technical project with multiple contributors while continuing to write code.
  • Ability to communicate technical work clearly to biologists and engineers through documentation, tutorials, talks, and workshops.
  • Preferred qualifications include expertise in both genomics and structural biology, widely used open-source computational biology tools, formal team leadership, a graduate degree or equivalent experience, systems programming in Rust, C++, or C, performance work on large biological datasets, experience in additional computational biology areas, and experience with AI-built software, agentic systems, or biological machine learning models.

Benefits

  • Annual salary range is $300,000—$320,000 USD.
  • Anthropic offers competitive benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office collaboration space.
  • The role currently follows a location-based hybrid policy requiring staff to be in an office at least 25% of the time, though some roles may require more office time.
