PR&D – Technical Lead Architect – Semantic Layer & Agentic AI

Responsibilities
- Build and own a unified semantic layer connecting structured, semi-structured, and unstructured PR&D/CMC data through ontologies, knowledge graphs, vector databases, and retrieval systems.
- Design and maintain connected structured and business ontologies, including entity and relationship extraction, triplet creation, validation, aggregation, and graph population.
- Develop multimodal and multilingual ingestion, ontology-based tagging, entity and intent recognition, and technical and business metadata-enrichment pipelines.
- Optimize hybrid graph, vector, and keyword retrieval for human exploration and agentic tool calls, tuning precision, recall, latency, and groundedness.
- Design and deploy Q&A, summarization, context-retrieval, and other agents through MCP servers, with multi-agent orchestration, handoffs, evaluation, observability, monitoring, and guardrails.
- Partner with PR&D scientists and business stakeholders to define and communicate the Semantic Layer roadmap and technical trade-offs.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership, design review, delivery oversight, mentorship, and talent development for data, knowledge graph, platform, and architecture engineers.
- Establish architecture review, ontology change-management, validation, traceability, security, privacy, and compliance practices for GxP-regulated systems.
- Evaluate emerging knowledge graph, vector database, and agentic AI technologies through staged proofs of concept and create reusable architecture patterns and reference implementations.
Requirements
- Proven experience building production knowledge graphs and semantic layers end to end rather than only overseeing them.
- Demonstrated success implementing semantic layers spanning structured and unstructured data, including ontology and knowledge graph technology decisions and retrieval optimization.
- Experience operating multiple production agents with shared guardrails, evaluation, and observability tooling beyond single-agent RAG or Q&A systems.
- Experience shaping technical roadmaps with business and science stakeholders and translating technical trade-offs for senior audiences.
- Experience providing technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams while remaining hands-on.
- Experience leading through ambiguity, complexity, and organizational transformation.
- Preferred experience with CMC, pharmaceutical, life sciences, batch records, process parameters, or LIMS, MES, DMS, and ELN systems.
- Familiarity with data-to-ontology mapping, document-to-schema conversion, MCP or equivalent tool-calling interfaces, agent-to-agent communication, and multi-agent orchestration.
- Background in pharma and GxP-regulated environments and knowledge of applicable data integrity, privacy, security, and compliance requirements.
