Base Salary
$124k - $329k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design and build core components of GitHub’s database platform across self-managed and cloud-managed infrastructure.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on database internals and database administration.
- Partner with engineering teams on database design reviews and incorporate their needs into platform planning.
- Operate and improve replication topology, failover automation, promotion, cross-region replication, backup and restore, and supporting tooling.
- Manage kernel tuning, storage configuration, and compute and disk SKU selection to meet throughput, latency, and durability targets.
- Contribute to database fleet capacity planning, reserved capacity strategy, instance sizing, and migration to new VM and disk generations.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to incidents.
- Contribute to the database fleet’s evolution onto Azure.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of relevant software engineering or related technical experience with production software development, or an associate degree plus 5 years, bachelor’s degree plus 4 years, master’s degree plus 2 years, doctorate, or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience maintaining and delivering production software using languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
- Strong expertise with MySQL internals, including InnoDB, GTID and semi-synchronous replication, replication lag, connection pooling, query routing, read-after-write consistency, and production performance diagnosis.
- Familiarity with database sharding in production, including shard key selection and cross-shard query costs.
- Strong production software development experience in Go, Python, Ruby, or Rust, particularly for agents, daemons, and operational command-line tooling.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure or another major cloud provider such as AWS or Google Cloud, plus familiarity with managed database offerings.
- Experience contributing to large-scale database infrastructure migrations involving replication-based cutover and correctness verification.
- Ability to break down complex systems into manageable components and build, operate, and maintain resilient, scalable systems.
