Responsibilities
- Analyze and decompose 1,000+ line SQL Server stored procedures and create migration strategies that move business logic into application or domain services.
- Design database modernization patterns using domain-driven design, bounded contexts, aggregates, domain events, CDC, outbox patterns, event sourcing, CQRS, and event streaming.
- Optimize queries, indexes, and execution plans while creating migration playbooks and reusable modernization tooling.
- Design semantic data models, vector database architectures, embedding pipelines, knowledge graph patterns, and AI-agent context architectures.
- Develop RAG evaluation frameworks covering retrieval accuracy, relevance scoring, hybrid retrieval, and continuous feedback loops.
- Architect canonical schemas, data pipelines, ETL/ELT orchestration, data quality, observability, data residency, partitioning, and multi-region strategies.
- Build AI-powered database engineering tools, structured AI-consumable artifacts, architecture skills, prompts, workflows, and migration assistants.
- Partner with AI/ML, domain, and application architecture teams and contribute to enterprise data architecture standards.
- Mentor engineers on database design, performance optimization, semantic modeling, and AI data infrastructure.
Requirements
- 8–12 years of database engineering and architecture experience, including significant enterprise-scale SQL Server experience.
- Deep SQL Server and T-SQL expertise, including stored procedure design and refactoring, query plan analysis, indexing, and performance tuning.
- Demonstrated experience decomposing complex stored procedures and migrating business logic into application services.
- Experience architecting relational, NoSQL, and analytical data platforms across SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cosmos DB, Snowflake, and data lakehouse environments.
- Production experience with CDC, Kafka, outbox patterns, event sourcing, and CQRS.
- Expertise in canonical and dimensional data modeling, schema evolution, and extensible data design.
- Hands-on experience with a vector database such as Pinecone, Weaviate, Milvus, pgvector, or Azure AI Search, plus RAG architecture, embeddings, chunking, retrieval optimization, hybrid search, and reranking.
- Understanding of embedding pipelines, LLM context requirements, token constraints, context-window optimization, semantic modeling, knowledge representation, and ontologies.
- At least 2 years of actively using AI coding assistants for database work and experience building AI- or LLM-enabled tools, scripts, or automation.
- Strong programming skills in at least one of C#, Java, or Python for migration tooling, embedding pipelines, and services.
- Experience with cloud data services, infrastructure as code, domain-driven design, data governance, lineage, and compliance requirements such as HIPAA and PCI-DSS.
- Preferred qualifications include experience in healthcare, benefits, payments, or other regulated industries; RAG or AI-powered search applications; knowledge graphs; open-source or database tooling contributions; and mentoring or community leadership.
Benefits
- Health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Retirement savings plan, paid time off, health savings account, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, and disability insurance.
- Tuition reimbursement and additional well-being benefits.
- Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus according to the applicable plan.
