Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and ship maintainable software solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services.
- Build deep familiarity with owned systems and document architectural designs, proposals, experiments, and prototypes.
- Lead by example, mentor engineers, and provide technical leadership through code reviews and quality standards.
- Design for high availability, performance, and GitHub-scale distributed-system workloads.
- Coordinate with engineering and product owners to prioritize and deliver cross-functional projects.
- Operate live services through a rotational on-call schedule and implement mitigations for complex production issues.
- Cultivate team ownership, empowerment, and belonging.
Requirements
- At least 9 years of relevant software engineering or related technical experience with production software development; equivalent experience is also accepted.
- Alternatively, an associate degree plus 8 years, bachelor’s degree plus 7 years, master’s degree plus 5 years, or doctorate plus 3 years of relevant experience is required.
- Proven experience maintaining and delivering production software in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
- Ability to meet GitHub, customer, and government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
- Preferred experience with Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.
- Preferred understanding of production monitoring, observability, performance characteristics, concurrency, latency, throughput, contention, backpressure, resource saturation, and failure modes.
- Preferred experience with large-scale system architecture, cloud-based environments, distributed systems, and microservices.
- Preferred experience collaborating with product management, design, and engineering teams on cross-functional projects.
