Battery Software & Controls Integration Engineer, Energy Storage
Redwood Materials8 hours ago
Base Salary
$152k - $287k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead benchtop and laboratory bring-up of second-life EV battery packs and reverse-engineer proprietary BMS architectures.
- Capture and decode CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, Ethernet, and vehicle-level wake, crash, interlock, pre-charge, and contactor signals.
- Design hardware and HIL test campaigns to validate OEM BMS state-of-charge, state-of-health, power-limit, thermal, resistance, balancing, and fault-threshold behavior.
- Implement and integrate Redwood’s battery state-estimation, degradation-mitigation, active-balancing, and derating algorithms in Rust or C/C++.
- Architect embedded software abstraction layers and translation gateways for pack telemetry, fault state machines, PCS interfaces, and site controllers.
- Act as the primary technical counterpart to automotive OEMs and Tier-1 BMS suppliers on firmware builds, lookup tables, diagnostic data, and deterministic command hooks.
- Model pack dynamics, inject sensor and contactor faults, and verify functional safety boundaries using HIL benches and physical cyclers.
Requirements
- MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Chemical/Electrochemical Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in BMS firmware or controls development, battery pack bring-up, or EV/BESS battery integration.
- Deep practical knowledge of lithium-ion battery physics, LFP and NMC chemistries, equivalent-circuit modeling, Kalman filtering, Coulomb counting, power-limit calculation, cell balancing, and high-voltage safety architecture.
- Expertise with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, CANalyzer, CANoe, busmaster, high-voltage power supplies and cyclers, and diagnostic protocols including UDS, CCP/XCP, J1939, CAN/CAN-FD, Automotive Ethernet, and Modbus.
- Strong programming proficiency in Rust and C/C++ in real-time embedded and Linux environments, plus experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Pandas, or SciPy for data analysis and modeling.
- Demonstrated ability to work with undocumented or partially documented battery packs and to lead technical engagements with external OEM engineering teams.
- Preferred experience with aged or second-life EV batteries, capacity-fade modeling, impedance spectroscopy, and open-circuit-voltage hysteresis.
- Preferred experience modifying bare-metal or RTOS BMS firmware on automotive microcontrollers such as TI C2000/Hercules, NXP S32K, and Infineon Aurix, and interfacing with TI, ADI/LTC, or NXP AFE chips.
Benefits
- Full-time position based in the San Francisco office with an onsite work model.
- California pay range is $152,000—$287,000 USD, with compensation commensurate with experience.
About Redwood Materials
Redwood Materials builds a circular supply chain for lithium-ion batteries by recycling end-of-life cells and manufacturing cathode active materials and copper foil for EV and grid-storage makers. The privately held company, founded in 2017 by JB Straubel and headquartered in Carson City, Nevada, also deploys large-scale energy storage systems. Its model combines collection and processing of batteries with U.S.-based production of critical materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper.
