Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and ship scalable, available, maintainable production software for GitHub’s Git Systems services.
- Lead technical discussions, design proposals, experiments, prototypes, and feature delivery within the team’s area.
- Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership through implementation guidance, debugging support, and code reviews.
- Partner with engineering and product stakeholders to define requirements, dependencies, milestones, estimates, and delivery tradeoffs.
- Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot live-site issues, execute mitigations and safe deployments, and write improvement-focused postmortems.
- Improve developer workflows through tooling, automation, repeatable quality checks, and incident learnings.
Requirements
- 6+ years of software engineering or related technical experience with production software coding experience; accepted alternatives include an associate degree with 5+ years, bachelor’s degree with 4+ years, master’s degree with 2+ years, a doctorate, or equivalent experience.
- Production software development experience in one or more of C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
- Ability to meet GitHub, customer, and government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
- Preferred: experience with Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services.
- Preferred: production monitoring and observability experience.
- Preferred: large-scale system architecture and design experience, particularly in cloud-based distributed systems and microservices.
- Preferred: experience collaborating with product management, design, and engineering teams on cross-functional projects.
