Base Salary

$96k - $110k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Prototype new ideas that help journalists report and tell stories.
  • Contribute to software features from technical design through live operation.
  • Participate in project research and technical design.
  • Build reliable, scalable, and secure features.
  • Work with newsroom desks on reporting involving data, documents, or novel story forms.
  • Collaborate with AI Initiatives, Data Journalism, Graphics, and other newsroom teams to create efficient, usable workflows.
  • Ensure systems provide clear and accurate information to reporters and readers.
  • Work under tight deadlines when supporting breaking news and major events.
  • Participate in skill-building and learning opportunities.
  • Support journalistic independence and The New York Times mission.
  • Report to an Engineering Manager and Project Editor.

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience building web applications in JavaScript, with TypeScript preferred.
  • Experience contributing to newsgathering, reporting, editing, or news presentation processes.
  • Experience taking a technical project from concept to completion, including concept definition, technical design, and implementation.
  • Experience developing software as part of a team.
  • Experience with AI software development best practices.
