Base Salary
$125k - $254k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, deploy, and maintain resilient and scalable backend services, applications, and core platform components for Toast’s Voice AI platform.
- Lead complex, cross-cutting projects end-to-end and drive alignment across teams and stakeholders.
- Make architectural decisions, define engineering patterns, and reduce complexity for dependent teams.
- Build and evolve integrations with AI platforms and internal Toast systems.
- Establish observability, monitoring, and evaluation frameworks for AI-powered systems and use production data to improve behavior.
- Set engineering quality standards and provide written guidance adopted across the organization.
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and technical guidance.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience with object-oriented languages such as Java or Kotlin.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience developing AI-integrated products or features involving LLMs or other AI capabilities.
- Experience reasoning about AI-powered systems, including nondeterminism, evaluation, observability, and cost management.
- Experience shipping complex, mission-critical production services and owning them over the long term.
- Track record of leading multi-person and multi-team projects from design through rollout.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and production reliability.
- Basic familiarity with frontend development.
- Strong cross-team communication and ability to influence direction without formal authority.
- Active use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor, along with experience helping others become more proficient with them.
- Experience with voice or conversational AI platforms is preferred but not required.
