Staff Software Engineer
General MotorsResponsibilities
- Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of complex web and platform capabilities across the MyAccount ecosystem.
- Drive technical strategy and architectural alignment across multiple teams, services, and stakeholder groups.
- Develop web applications using Next.js, React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
- Design and develop APIs supporting core business capabilities and long-term platform evolution.
- Translate business goals into technical plans, roadmaps, and scalable implementation approaches.
- Improve reliability, scalability, performance, observability, monitoring, alerting, and developer productivity.
- Identify and remediate software issues, operational weaknesses, design inconsistencies, and security vulnerabilities.
- Apply software engineering fundamentals, design patterns, and established frameworks throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Develop unit and automated tests to maintain code quality and application reliability.
- Drive clarity on technical tradeoffs and long-term maintainability.
- Mentor and coach engineers across levels, including senior engineers.
- Document software solutions and existing systems in alignment with GM engineering standards.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, design, security, and platform teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of software development experience, including significant experience building and evolving customer-facing web applications or platforms at scale.
- Strong hands-on experience with software delivery, deployment, and operational ownership.
- Deep understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, APIs, testing strategy, quality assurance, solution validation, and test automation.
- Experience maintaining, debugging, and improving live software applications for stability, performance, and resilience.
- Ability to drive technical direction and influence architectural decisions across team boundaries without direct authority.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering, product, design, security, and platform teams.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar.
- Ability to connect technical initiatives to business objectives and make sound decisions in complex problem spaces.
- Preferred: master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- Preferred: experience with modern web frameworks such as Next.js, Angular, React, or Ember.
- Preferred: experience with customer identity, authentication, account management, consent, profile, or other security-sensitive systems.
- Preferred: experience modernizing large platforms and improving observability, reliability, and operational excellence.
