Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate core components of the Serverless Elasticsearch offering.
- Improve Elasticsearch components supporting concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
- Maintain cluster coordination while preserving system safety, liveness, and performance as nodes and data change.
- Increase the number of shards, nodes, and petabytes Elasticsearch can support.
- Investigate and resolve complex performance, concurrency, and stability issues end to end.
- Support engineers handling difficult customer and operational problems.
- Own projects from technical design through implementation and coordinate work involving multiple engineers.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
- Strong core Java skills, including data structures, concurrency constructs, and newer language features.
- Deep proficiency in algorithms and experience building large-scale distributed systems rather than only using off-the-shelf services.
- Experience building and debugging complex, broadly impactful features running across multiple machines.
- Ability to own projects end to end and collaborate across teams, projects, codebases, and functions.
- Experience managing projects involving multiple engineers.
- Demonstrated use of AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while retaining ownership of outcomes.
- Bonus experience with data stores, search, analytics, Lucene, the JDK, and asynchronous event-driven frameworks such as Netty.
- Ability to work autonomously and drive decisions and results through asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication in a distributed team.
