Base Salary
$156k - $263k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and own backend services and APIs for self-service cloud account provisioning, networking, IAM, and policy capabilities.
- Convert manual cloud work and runbooks into safe-by-default APIs, controls, automation, and reusable infrastructure products.
- Treat internal Zillow engineering teams as platform customers by shaping interfaces, paved paths, and developer experiences based on feedback and usage data.
- Design for observability, SLOs, self-healing, reliability, and production operations, including on-call ownership and follow-up improvements.
- Influence Platform Engineering’s approach to public cloud enablement and roadmap decisions.
- Use AI-assisted and agentic tooling to accelerate design, implementation, and operations while maintaining quality and safety.
Requirements
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating backend or platform services in production.
- Strong distributed-systems, system-design, API-platform, resiliency, simplicity, and observability skills.
- Production experience with Golang or Python, or another modern programming language, along with testing, code review, and debugging experience.
- Strong experience with at least one public cloud provider, preferably AWS, including VPCs, subnets, routing, load balancers, security groups, IAM, compute, and storage.
- Experience using Terraform as reusable, tested infrastructure-as-code and managing change safety and drift.
- Working knowledge of cloud security fundamentals including IAM, network segmentation, encryption, and policy enforcement in multi-account environments.
- Hands-on experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure or backend services using tools such as GitLab Pipelines, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or Argo.
- Experience building internal platforms or developer tooling, such as account vending, golden paths, or self-service provisioning, is preferred.
- Experience treating an internal platform as a product, including defining interfaces, measuring adoption, and improving developer experience, is preferred.
- Familiarity with service-to-service networking, service mesh, workload identity, or rate limiting in cloud environments is preferred.
- Strong Linux systems and networking fundamentals are preferred.

- Remote position with no permanent corporate office workplace; U.S. employees may work from any of the 50 states with limited exceptions.
- Eligible for equity awards in addition to base salary.
- Base pay is $164,400.00-$262,600.00 annually in specified locations and $156,200.00-$249,400.00 annually in other specified locations.
