Responsibilities
- Own Apple’s device compute data lakehouse and transform raw device and compute events into reliable, fast-to-query datasets.
- Build and run Apache Spark batch and Structured Streaming pipelines at production scale.
- Design analytics tables and schemas in Apache Iceberg for forecasting, capacity planning, and organizational cross-charging.
- Implement data quality checks, freshness and completeness alerting, and source-to-derived-data reconciliation.
- Take ownership of event ingestion from Kafka over time.
- Tune data tables and queries for dashboards accessed through Trino.
- Collaborate with data analysts, full-stack engineers, application engineers, and teams across Apple.
- Lead data platform, cost, and reliability improvements and mentor engineers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 7+ years of professional data engineering experience building production data pipelines at scale, including diagnosing and improving data job and query performance, or equivalent advanced degree plus experience.
- Production experience with Apache Spark, including batch and Structured Streaming pipelines.
- Strong data modeling skills and experience designing analytics schemas on Apache Iceberg or comparable lakehouse table formats.
- Proficiency in Java or Scala and strong SQL skills.
- Experience building production data quality checks and monitoring, including freshness and completeness alerting and source-to-derived-data reconciliation.
- Productive use of AI coding tools in real delivery, with discipline to validate generated code and queries.
- Excellent communication and critical thinking skills in a team environment.
- Preferred: production Apache Kafka experience, Apache Flink experience including Iceberg sinks, exactly-once delivery, and stateful Kubernetes jobs.
- Preferred: experience with data contracts, schema management as code, schema registries, dbt model contracts, Trino tuning, workflow orchestration, Python automation, dashboards or data applications, and data platform ownership.
- Preferred: experience mentoring engineers and leading cost or reliability improvements.
