Responsibilities
- Set the medium- and long-term technical strategy for cloud infrastructure, the data platform, core banking configuration, CI/CD, networking, and the Bank-to-Affirm Inc integration.
- Design, build, integrate, and operate ambiguous, high-stakes systems with clear failure domains, monitoring, and runbooks.
- Set standards for code review, design review, examiner-readable documentation, architecture, and engineering practices on a small team.
- Use AI tools and agentic workflows for development, design review, runbook generation, and operations.
- Lead evaluation, integration, operational ownership, escalation, and audit oversight for third-party banking, data, identity, observability, and card-processing platforms.
- Define domain boundaries, data flows, and integration patterns between the bank and Affirm Inc while preserving legal and regulatory separation.
- Partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, BSA/AML, Finance, and Internal Audit to build compliance into products and systems.
- Establish reliability, observability, alerting, incident-response, and disaster-recovery practices for standalone operation and audit readiness.
- Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, and constraints to bank executives, the Bank Board, Compliance, Risk, and engineers across Affirm.
- Mentor engineers, provide feedback, contribute to hiring, and help establish the team's architecture and technical bar.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with staff-level, hands-on ownership of ambiguous, high-stakes systems through launch and operations.
- Fluency with AI-assisted development tools and workflows, including Claude, Cursor, Codex, and agentic workflows.
- Experience building lean engineering systems and applying buy-over-build and default-deny principles.
- Experience setting architecture and multi-quarter technical strategy across engineers and teams.
- Deep systems experience with public cloud infrastructure, infrastructure-as-code, and cloud data platforms, with AWS preferred and Terraform and Snowflake or comparable platforms named as examples.
- Direct experience in banking, payments, securities, healthcare, or another externally examined regulated environment.
- Experience selecting, integrating, and operating significant third-party platforms after launch.
- Ability to communicate technical, regulatory, and operational concepts to executives, boards, non-engineering stakeholders, and examiners, with strong written and verbal communication.
- Prior work in a bank, neobank, Banking-as-a-Service provider, card issuer or processor, or chartered-bank fintech is preferred.
- Experience with a de novo bank launch, early-stage bank buildout, greenfield regulated platform, bank core, card processing or issuer processor integration, or digital bank experience integration is preferred.
- Experience standing up a greenfield cloud organization, IAM model, and data platform under a default-deny security posture is preferred.
- Familiarity with FDIC examinations, GLBA, Reg P, BSA/AML, Reg E, Reg DD, Reg Z, model risk, and third-party risk management is preferred.
