Responsibilities
- Design, build, and evolve Go backend services for scalable ingestion, transport, replication, storage, querying, and deployment.
- Own significant portions of the architecture for the Data Insights Platform, Siphon, and Query API, including gRPC integration with GitLab Rails.
- Develop and operate systems involving replication, buffering, messaging layers, query-serving, and query-oriented storage.
- Drive production readiness and deployment across GitLab SaaS, Dedicated, and Self-Managed environments.
- Debug and improve distributed systems by addressing performance bottlenecks, scaling limits, failure recovery, and observability gaps.
- Collaborate with Infrastructure, Data, and Engineering teams on technical design, planning, code review, and delivery.
- Work asynchronously in GitLab’s all-remote environment and use AI tools in implementation, debugging, investigation, and documentation workflows.
Requirements
- Strong backend engineering experience in Go, including building and operating production services.
- Experience designing scalable and reliable systems for high-throughput or data-intensive workloads.
- Experience building and evolving APIs and service integrations, including gRPC or similar patterns.
- Experience with data platforms, data systems, event pipelines, or foundational infrastructure.
- Experience with ClickHouse or similar query-focused data stores.
- Working knowledge of Ruby on Rails or the ability and willingness to ramp up quickly.
- Experience with reliability, observability, performance, and deployment across production environments.
- Experience collaborating across team boundaries to deliver platform capabilities for product and engineering teams.
