Base Salary
$250k - $349k/yr
Responsibilities
- Set the technical direction and investment priorities for Core DevOps services spanning CI, CD, Plan, and source code experiences.
- Translate company-wide productivity, quality, and AI-native engineering goals into technical roadmaps and architecture decisions.
- Define and enforce measurable standards for availability, latency, pipeline success, test reliability, data correctness, and defect escape rate.
- Identify and retire systemic technical risks, including single points of failure, brittle coupling, scaling limits, and unowned critical paths.
- Lead complex designs hands-on through code, prototypes, proofs of concept, migrations, and rollback strategies.
- Drive convergence on shared patterns, libraries, and paved paths across the group.
- Serve as an escalation point for contested technical decisions and review significant designs and merge requests.
- Ensure systems work across GitLab.com, GitLab Dedicated, and Self-Managed deployments while respecting multi-tenant, compliance, and data governance boundaries.
- Partner with Infrastructure, Security, SRE, and Product on observability, resilience, failure handling, and roadmap planning.
- Mentor Principal and Staff Engineers, raise standards for technical writing and design rigor, and participate in senior technical hiring.
- Participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation and complete Interview Training.
Requirements
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years in a Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior technical leadership role.
- Deep expertise in AI and ML systems, including large language models, agentic frameworks, and autonomous workflow design at production scale.
- Experience leading hands-on technical experimentation, evaluation frameworks, benchmarking, and translation of findings into scalable architecture.
- Strong background in scalable, multi-tenant distributed systems, service decomposition, fault tolerance, observability, and operational resilience.
- Experience designing and implementing human-in-the-loop controls, safety guardrails, and responsible AI practices for production systems.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical direction across multiple teams or divisions without direct authority.
- Ability to work effectively in a fully remote, globally distributed organization with strong written and asynchronous communication skills.
