Responsibilities

  • Design highly scalable, mission-critical brokerage systems for the Japan market.
  • Develop middle- and back-office systems, including gRPC microservices, REST and gRPC APIs, and third-party vendor integrations.
  • Enhance the core framework to support multiple languages, currencies, markets, and Japan-specific requirements.
  • Translate Japanese regulatory, vendor, partner, and business requirements into technical specifications for global engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with global engineering teams and regional technical leads through meetings, Slack, and asynchronous communication.
  • Troubleshoot incidents and bugs, participate in on-call rotations, and support production issues during Japan business hours.
  • Contribute to regional recruitment initiatives, cross-functional projects, engineering practices, and Alpaca’s Japan-region culture.

Requirements

  • Native or JLPT N1-level Japanese fluency with professional reading, writing, and communication skills.
  • Business-level English fluency for meetings, design discussions, code reviews, and documentation.
  • Proven experience designing and developing complex financial systems, preferably including double-entry accounting.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, ledger structures, transaction reconciliation, scalable high-availability financial applications, and multi-currency transactions.
  • Familiarity with financial-market regulatory compliance, preferably including Japanese frameworks such as FIEA, FSA, JSDA, or JIPF.
  • Proficiency in at least one statically typed language such as Go, Rust, Java, Kotlin, C#, Scala, or C++.
  • Experience with financial APIs, market-data integrations, trade settlement processes, domain-driven design, and event-driven design.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, software architecture experience, communication skills, problem-solving ability, and independent execution in a fast-paced remote environment.
  • Ability to lead and troubleshoot incidents during Japan business hours and translate technical concepts into business strategies.
  • Preferred qualifications include Go experience, Japanese financial-services experience, integrations with JPX, JSCC, JASDEC, or Japanese banks, and knowledge of NISA, iDeCo, tokutei-koza, or MyNumber.
  • Preferred qualifications also include startup experience, financial-markets interest, vendor management, organizational budgeting, and experience working with global English-speaking teams.
