Staff Backend Engineer, Database Automation (Go)

Base Salary

$153k - $259k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, maintain, and operate Go-based automation for PostgreSQL provisioning, configuration, upgrades, failover, scaling, and decommissioning.
  • Build GitLab’s PostgreSQL-as-a-Service platform with standardized automated provisioning and lifecycle management.
  • Develop SQL traffic replay tooling and safe, repeatable PostgreSQL major-version upgrade automation validated against production workloads.
  • Integrate compute, storage, networking, identity and access management, cloud infrastructure, and managed data services into a coherent database platform.
  • Research and implement improvements to PostgreSQL performance, scalability, and data health for high-throughput, always-on services.
  • Review Go and database automation changes, document operational practices, and collaborate with product, infrastructure, software delivery, database, and platform teams.
  • Own the technical direction of a major initiative, influence engineering patterns, mentor engineers, and operate the resulting services in production.

Requirements

  • Professional software engineering experience working with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments, including experience building or operating a database-as-a-service product.
  • Proficiency with Go, including designing, implementing, testing, and reviewing backend services.
  • Experience developing Kubernetes operators, controllers, or comparable automation for the lifecycle of stateful services, particularly databases.
  • Comfort with infrastructure as code and database operations concepts including high availability, replication, backups, and system-level performance trade-offs.
  • Strong written communication, asynchronous collaboration, self-directed work habits, organizational skills, and ability to manage priorities independently.
  • Ability to own technical direction for an ambiguous major initiative, create an architecture and execution plan, influence teams beyond the immediate group, and mentor engineers.
  • Familiarity with Ruby is preferred but not required; experience with Ruby on Rails is useful.
